2018 Big Island & Waikiki Hawaii Ladies Golf Tour

Saturday 10th March 2018 – Arrival in Hawaii!

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourAfter a short 9 hour overnight flight from Sydney, the ladies arrived in Honolulu before boarding another short 45 minute flight to the Big Island.  We arrived to a fresh flower lei greeting, before boarding our bus and heading North to the Kohala Coast of the Big Island.  Driving through lava fields with little pockets of lush greenery, the landscape is dramatic and spectacular.  Turning off the main road, we enter an oasis of calm, and into our luxury 5 star private houses, which will be our home for the next 6 days on this island.  Within a private gated community, with pools, spas, a gym and putting greens, we will have plenty to keep us occupied.

After dropping our bags and exploring our houses, we are shown to our resort carts (a 4 seater golf cart with seat belts and storage container for our bags).  We form a little convoy and drive around the resort grounds, to help us get our bearings.  We are shown the various hotels that reside within the grounds, as well as the shops and restaurants, the golf courses and the private beach that we have access to.  That evening we enjoy welcome drinks and nibbles before all gratefully falling into bed, looking forward to the first day of golf, tomorrow.

Sunday 11th March 2018 – Waikoloa Golf Club – Beach Course

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourAfter a very respectful sleep in, we are picked up for our transfer to our first day of golf at 10:15am.  On arrival, we find our golf bags already loaded onto our golf carts, and our cart coolers filled with ice and bottles of water.  On this Hawaii Ladies Golf Tour, some  have opted to play 18 holes at each course, and some take advantage of Tiffany Mika’s half day golf clinics followed by 9 holes.  After a good look around the well stocked pro shop, we all head out to the driving range to warm up.  After 15 minutes the 18 holers head to the first tee, while the others stay to benefit from Tiffany’s considerable knowledge.  They cover full swing and chipping before heading inside the clubhouse to have a delicious lunch.  Afterwards they too hit the course.

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourThe first hole saw us teeing off over water.  Many of the ladies haven’t played on the Big Island before, and the beauty of the lava and lush green fairways prove to be distraction (or possibly an excuse!).  There was quite a breeze as we played which proved to be a challenge as we made our way around the Beach Course from the Red Tees.  Many of us found the lava that lined the fairways, and it was the luck of the draw which way your ball would bounce. Each hole was more beautiful than the last.  After golf we headed back to our homes and all chose restaurants of our choice for dinner.    Those that joined tour hosts Tiffany Mika and Ainslie Saunders at Tommy Bahamas had a fabulous dinner, listening to local live music.

Monday 12th March 2018 – Mauna Lani Golf Club – South Course

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourMauna Lani Golf Club’s South Course is so beautiful we made sure that everyone played the full 18 holes here.  After another shopping experience in their gorgeous pro shop, everyone benefited from Tiffany’s putting clinic before heading out to the first tee.  The gardens surrounding the course are just magnificent.  The contrast of the black lava, white sand, lush green fairways and swaying palm trees is just magical.  And then you hit the holes that wrap around the coast.  Hawaii Ladies Golf TourStunningly beautiful, and a little intimidating as you hit over the ocean, it was easy to be distracted.  Some of us lost balls, some had chunks gouged from our balls as they flew across the lava, and some ended the day with the same ball they started with.  After golf we all enjoyed a drink (or two) in the clubhouse where the day’s competition winners were awarded their prizes before we headed back home to freshen up.  Some chose to stay in for dinner, while others took the opportunity to head to the Queens Marketplace to enjoy some of the restaurants there.

 Tuesday 13th March 2018 – Rest Day

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourThose that hadn’t had enough golf, decided to play another round at Mauna Lani, on their North Course.  It was much more challenging than the South, but just as beautiful.  Some of the ladies on the Hawaii Ladies Golf Tour took the opportunity to have a private lesson with Tiffany Mika, some chose to look around the shops or relax.  Others joined Ainslie on a tour of the North East of the island, to the Hawaiian cowboy town of Waimea and then on to Waipi’o Valley, which was Hawaii Ladies Golf Tourthe capital and permanent residence of many early Hawaiian aliʻi (kings) up until the time of King ʻUmi. It was the location of the ancient grass palace of the ancient kings of Hawaii.  The valley floor at sea level is almost 2,000 ft (610 m) below the surrounding terrain.  Absolutely stunningly beautiful, it was great to see how diverse the landscape is on this island.

That evening, those that were interested in learning more about the Hawaiian culture attended a luau with a huge feast.

Wednesday 14th March 2018 – Mauna Kea Golf Club

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourEver played a golf course with 99 bunkers?  It’s a challenge.  Thankfully the amazing views at Mauna Kea helped to keep our spirits up.  Created in 1964 by Robert Trent Jones Sr. on what was once a barren black lava field, Mauna Kea’s lush fairways roll across seaside cliffs with unfolding ocean and coastal views. Elevated and undulating greens, surrounded by bunkers kept us on our toes, and demanded accuracy.  The epic over-the-ocean 3rd hole was unforgettable, and the epitome of golf on the Big Island.  At this course, some of our ladies decided ditch the golf carts to make the most of the golf boards and carved their way around the course.  Others decided to take the opportunity to improve their skills with Tiffany, The Lady Golf Teacher and her intensive clinic.  The rest of us played a gorgeous and leisurely 18 holes followed by a Mai Tai, or two.

Thursday 15th March 2018 – Hapuna Golf Club

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourAfter an informative and fun clinic with Tiff, we teed off at Hapuna Golf Club.  A rugged Hawaiian beauty that comes of greens set amidst a dark lava field, seemingly endless ocean and coastline views.  We could see why Hapuna is a favourite amongst the locals of the island.  Thankful that we had our motorised carts, as the course begins at sea level before rising to 700 feet (215m).  The signature par 4, 12th hole has one of the most spectacular panoramic views on Hawaii’s Big Island – including Maui in the distance.

It was great to spend our last night on the Big Island at a Beach Club, watching the sunset over the water, with a cocktail at hand.  Listening to the gentle Hawaiian music while eating dinner was a highlight.

Friday 16th March 2018 – From the Big Island to Waikiki

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourFollowing a leisurely morning we packed our bags and left the gorgeous Mauna Lani Resort to make our way across the lava fields to Kona International Airport.  After a quick 45 minute flight we were on Oahu, and making our way to Waikiki.  On the way we stopped at one of the islands biggest golf warehouses to give the ladies an opportunity to do some quick shopping, or to eye off some of the bargains that they could return and pick up the following day.  From here we headed to our hotel by the beach in Waikiki and everyone spread out to do exactly as they wanted.  Shop, relax, swim, eat, sip sunset cocktails and enjoy.

 Saturday 17th March 2018 – Waikiki

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourA trip to Hawaii just isn’t complete without at least one full day in Waikiki.  Some of our ladies went to Waikele Outlets, some to Ala Moana Hawaii’s largest shopping mall, some enjoyed a leisurely lunch and others took the opportunity to lay in the sun and swim in the ocean.  At sunset we met for cocktails by the beach before heading out to our farewell 3 course dinner.  Tomorrow we would board our respective flights and head home or onto our next adventures.  We had some lovely ladies on this trip, that came from all over Australia to join us.  We feel very privileged that they would all choose Golf & Tours to look after them on their ladies golf holiday.

Hawaii Ladies Golf TourMahalo for the good times ladies!  See you next year in Maui! xx
