What do you enjoy the most about hosting tours?

The look I see on guests’ faces when they see their first elephant in the wild; the way guests hold their breath when a lion strolls past the open game vehicle. I enjoy being part of what I believe can be life changing moments for guests.

What do you love the most about travelling?

Meeting strangers who become friends.

What do you think are the most important attributes of a Tour Host?

  • The ability to listen to guests and act on any issues that are raised
  • To be aware of guests’ needs, particularly those guests who are hesitant to speak up
  • Strong communication and organisational skills to ensure guests are fully aware of the daily timetable
  • The ability to deal calmly and effectively with service providers when things don’t go to plan
  • Awareness of local contact details and procedures in case of emergency

What do you do when you’re not hosting tours?

Living in a small coastal tourist destination, there’s always an opportunity to play golf with visitors. I love cooking and entertaining and punishing guests with stories about Africa. I’m a cross between Mrs Bucket/Bouquet and Crocodile Dundee.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Golf has played a major role in my life. I applied to Qantas to be a flight attendant and when the question was asked, “if you get this job Sandy you’ll have a lot of spare time, what would you be doing today?” I replied that I’d be playing golf. The interviewer’s face broke into a huge grin as he said, “We have golf clubs at every hotel we stay at, we play golf over the world, you’ll love it!”.

That career lasted 28 years and I did play golf all over the world. My favourite destinations were Zimbabwe and South Africa. My new career as a Golf &Tours host is perfect – I plan to take everyone I meet on a golfing safari!
