Founded in 1967 and tucked away in Johannesburg’s prestigious Sandton district, this invitation-only club is a serene oasis of lush kikuyu fairways, mature trees and beautifully manicured surrounds. Legend Golf & Safari Resort: The Extreme 19th
The World’s Longest, Highest & Most Dramatic Par 3

The adventure begins with a thrilling helicopter flight to the mountaintop tee, taking in panoramic views across the Waterberg wilderness before launching your ball toward the famous Africa-shaped green far below.
Since opening in 2009, the Extreme 19th has attracted golfers, celebrities and sporting personalities from around the world, including Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman, who famously recorded a par on the hole. From 2027, only 2,500 golfers annually will be able to play this iconic challenge, adding a new level of exclusivity to one of the game’s most unforgettable experiences.

How we chose this itinerary
Golf & Tours carefully curated this itinerary to combine South Africa’s top-ranked Johannesburg courses with a once-in-a-lifetime golfing challenge and an authentic safari experience. Our goal was to create a journey that contrasts championship golf with the untamed beauty of the African bush, all without sacrificing five-star comfort at any stage of the trip.
Why travel to South Africa in April
Golf & Tours scheduled this tour for April because it offers the best overall conditions to play golf in South Africa while comfortably exploring the Waterberg.
April falls in the South African autumn, when the peak summer heat has eased and rainfall drops off, leaving clear skies, mild temperatures and excellent visibility for both golf and game viewing. Courses around Johannesburg are in prime condition coming out of the growing season, while drier bushveld vegetation in the Waterberg makes wildlife easier to spot on safari drives.
Perfect weather for golf April offers some of the most comfortable golfing conditions of the year around Johannesburg, with mild days, low humidity and well-conditioned fairways at The River Club, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington, and Legend Golf & Safari Resort.
Ideal timing for safari With the rains behind it, the Waterberg’s vegetation begins to thin, improving sightlines for game drives and increasing the chances of strong wildlife encounters in the Welgevonden Game Reserve.
The best season for a Luxury Small Group Golf Tour By scheduling this journey in April, Golf & Tours ensures travellers can fully enjoy every element of the tour, from championship golf to safari, in the most comfortable conditions possible.

The World’s Longest, Highest & Most Dramatic Par 3
Prepare for one of the most extraordinary experiences in golf. The Extreme 19th is far more than just another hole on the scorecard, it is a true bucket-list adventure and one of the most iconic golfing experiences on the planet. Combining a breathtaking helicopter flight, spectacular African scenery and a challenge unlike any other, the Extreme 19th is a moment you’ll remember long after the final putt has dropped.

The Hole
The Extreme 19th is the world’s longest and highest Par 3. Played from the summit of Hanglip Mountain, the tee box sits an incredible 430 metres above the green below, offering panoramic views across the vast African bushveld. The target is a unique green shaped like the continent of Africa, located approximately 400 metres beneath the tee. To reach the green requires a remarkable shot of around 260 metres, while your golf ball can remain airborne for up to 40 seconds as it soars through the African sky.

The Experience
The adventure begins with a thrilling helicopter flight to the mountaintop tee box. As you fly above the reserve, you’ll enjoy spectacular aerial views of the surrounding wilderness, grasslands and rugged landscape before landing on one of the most dramatic teeing grounds in the world.
Standing on the edge of the mountain with endless views stretching to the horizon is an experience in itself. Then comes the moment you’ve been waiting for – launching your tee shot from the cliff-top towards the famous Africa-shaped green far below. Equal parts adrenaline, excitement and awe, it is an unforgettable golfing moment.
A World-Famous Golfing Challenge
Since opening in 2009, the Extreme 19th has attracted golfers, celebrities and sporting personalities from around the world. Today, golfers travel from across the globe to take on this legendary challenge and experience one of the most photographed and talked-about holes in world golf.

A Story You’ll Tell Forever

Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman famously recorded a par on the hole, while former Barbados cricket star Franklyn Stephenson achieved the first recorded birdie after holing a seven-metre putt.
Today, golfers travel from across the globe to take on this legendary challenge and experience one of the most photographed and talked-about holes in world golf.

A Story You’ll Tell Forever
No golfer will ever forget their experience of the Extreme 19th. Whether it’s the helicopter flight, the breathtaking views from Hanglip Mountain, or watching your ball disappear into the vast African landscape before finally landing below, this is one of those rare golfing moments that becomes a story you’ll tell for years to come and from 2027, only 2,500 golfers annually will be able to play the iconic Extreme 19th, adding a new level of exclusivity to one of the game’s most unforgettable experiences.
Evening Dinner and Drinks
After a thrilling day of extreme golf, sit down, relax and unwind with a delicious meal as you reminisce on your days adventure.

Set amongst the dramatic landscapes of the Waterberg, the par-72 course winds through open grasslands and native bushveld beneath the towering Hanglip Mountain. Stretching from 6,534 metres for daily play to an impressive 7,748 metres from the championship tees, every hole offers its own distinct character and challenge.
As you journey from Trevor Immelman’s opening hole to Retief Goosen’s memorable finishing hole, you’ll experience a course unlike any other, where world-class golf, spectacular scenery and the possibility of wildlife sightings combine to create an unforgettable round.
