Bushfire Recovery Self Drive Golf Tour
The golf clubs on the Far South Coast of New South Wales played an important role during the devastating bushfires in 2019/20.
During the horrendous and ferocious 2019/20 Australian Bushfire Crisis, more than 12.6 million hectares burned. Nearly half of that was in New South Wales. Almost 65% of the Far South Coast was burnt. Tragically 33 people and over 1 billion animals were killed throughout Australia.
Many Australians lost their homes, their businesses and all of their possessions. During this terrifying and tragic time, for many, their local golf club became their evacuation point and safe haven.
These golf clubs opened their clubhouses, fairways and driving ranges to evacuees. Clubhouses and their kitchens were manned around the clock to ensure everyone was safe and fed. Fairways were turned into safe campgrounds and driving nets into makeshift stables for animals.
The golf clubs, after being unable to trade during what is usually their peak period, have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue.
But now, the bushfires have been extinguished, and the locals in these devastated communities are starting to rebuild. It’s time to pack your Empty Esky and head off on a South Coast Bushfire Recovery Self Drive Golf Tour.
